Lessons from Myths, Legends and Fairy Tales: Part 10 Robin Hood

Robin Hood, the legendary outlaw who rebelled against tyranny, famously stealing from the rich to give to the poor: thief or hero? Like all things in life, it depends on one’s perspective.

Whilst I am not advocating stealing from anyone, I think of Robin Hood as a symbol of justice, equality; standing up for what is right. He is a symbol of hope, reminding us that a single individual can ignite meaningful change. The original champion of the underdog, Robin Hood, is a beacon for those who have faced oppression and exclusion, personifying the power of the people, representing a fairer world for all.

The values that Robin Hood embodies, his relentless pursuit of equity and justice resonates deeply with me. It also compels me to acknowledge my own responsibility in standing up for what is right, appealing to that part of me that rails against social injustice. When we look at the disparities that exist in our world, never has the symbolism of Robin Hood been more relevant than it is today.

Robin Hood’s story is not just a legend, it is a powerful call to action, a symbol of our moral accountability to one another. If we do nothing, nothing will change. We can all make an effort to champion the underdog: we can choose to help and not walk past when we see someone in distress, we can choose to speak up when a co-worker or friend is treated unfairly. We can pay it forward; when we have money to spare, we can donate to those who don’t have. Collectively we can make an effort to lift each other up, rather than adopting the “each-man-for-himself” attitude.

It takes courage to stand up against injustice. But if we collectively embrace our inner Robin Hood, standing up for the rights of those marginalised and oppressed, fighting for what we believe in, we can make the world a better and fairer place.

Let’s not wait for somebody else to be the people’s champion.

Let’s be the change we want to see in the world.
