“You don’t have to know what comes next. You don’t have to have everything figured out right this second. You don’t need to know your entire story. You are a living, changing, growing soul riding through your unique and beautiful journey of life. And that’s exactly what it is – a journey – and it wouldn’t be a journey if you knew everything that was coming next. It wouldn’t be a journey if you knew how it would all turn out in the end. So be patient with yourself and smile at the not knowing, because your story is just starting to be written” – Nikki Banas
Tomorrow is my youngest child’s final day at school. This is a major milestone not only for him, but for me too. I have had a child at school since 2003. That’s 20 years of waking up at 6.30am to make sure they have breakfast and don’t miss the school bus.
While I sit here pondering what this will mean for me, for him, and how I feel about it all, I realise that it’s actually not about me at all. This next chapter for our emerging adults is huge and I hope that the poem above helps them appreciate that it is not all in the knowing. It really is okay to not know what is coming next. If the pandemic has taught me anything, it’s that we really don’t have control over what is coming next, but we can control our reaction to it.
And so, to all those writing their final exams, be it IB, IEB, A-Levels or B-Tech, good luck! Just remember that these exams do not define you or your future, they are just a necessary hurdle to jump to the next stage of your journey.
